About this playground
This beautifully designed playground, created in collaboration with Te Ākitai Waiohua iwi, offers a mix of adventure, creativity, and inclusive play. Kids can explore tall towers, tube slides, rope bridges, flying foxes, and a dedicated musical zone with outdoor instruments. The twin flying fox setup keeps the lines moving, while younger children can enjoy a safer fenced play area. A fantastic local playground overall, though families should bring sun protection as there is very little shade available.
Note: David Lange Playground is in Māngere — not on Auckland's North Shore.
Before you go
- There is very little shade — bring sunscreen and hats, especially in summer
- Watch for bikes and scooters cutting through the play area — the open layout means wheels move fast
- Twin flying foxes keep the queue moving; the height is manageable for kids around five and up
- Dedicated musical zone with outdoor instruments — a real highlight, not just a side panel
David Lange Playground — Adventure, Music, and Inclusive Play in Māngere
A beautifully designed destination playground created in collaboration with Te Ākitai Waiohua iwi — tall towers, tube slides, twin flying foxes, and a musical zone that gives the whole place a different kind of energy.
The Landmark Towers
The first thing you notice is the scale. The big slide tower that defines this playground rises above the play area, linked by rope bridges, with multiple tube slides dropping down from the upper levels. The surfacing throughout is rubber, which makes getting around with a pram much easier than wood chips, and it softens falls when kids are moving between climbers at speed.
It's a proper adventure setup — kids can climb, cross, and slide in a loop without running out of things to try. The towers feel substantial rather than decorative, and there's enough height and variety to keep older kids engaged while still reading as a thoughtfully designed space rather than a jumble of equipment.
Twin Flying Foxes
The flying fox setup is a double line — two side by side — which makes a bigger difference than it sounds. On a busy day, a single flying fox can mean long waits and short tempers. Here, the twin lines keep turns moving, so kids spend more time riding and less time queuing. The height is also approachable — around five years old and up, many kids can manage it without it feeling too intimidating.
Fully Fenced for Toddlers
There's also a safer, fully fenced play area for younger children, which is reassuring if you've got a toddler who likes to wander. Inclusive features include a wheelchair-accessible carousel, so the playground works for a wider range of abilities than many adventure-focused spaces.
The Musical Zone — Don't Skip This
Tucked into the playground is a dedicated musical area with outdoor instruments — a small xylophone, drums, and more. This isn't a single panel bolted onto a fence; it's a proper zone where kids can make real sound, and it changes the feel of the whole visit.
The instrument sounds carry across the playground in a way that's oddly lovely — kids playing music while others climb and slide. It gives David Lange a character most destination playgrounds don't have.
Younger children especially linger here, tapping out rhythms and experimenting with volume. Even if your kids are more climbers than musicians, it's worth steering them over — it's one of the things that makes this playground stick in the memory.
A Few Things to Know
Shade is scarce. On a hot day, that matters. Pack sunscreen, hats, and maybe a picnic blanket you can pull into whatever shade you find nearby. It's the one honest downside we'd flag before you go.
Also keep an eye out for bikes and scooters. The open, rubber-surfaced layout makes it easy for kids on wheels to cut through quickly, and smaller children on foot can get caught off guard.
Parking is fair rather than abundant — plan for a short walk if it's busy — and toilets are on site, which helps for a longer stay. The surrounding green space is generous, so once the kids are done with the towers and flying foxes, there's room to run, picnic, or simply sit and listen to the instruments in the background.
Overall Thoughts
David Lange Playground is a fantastic local destination — thoughtfully designed, genuinely fun across age groups, and distinctive thanks to the musical zone and the twin flying foxes. The collaboration with Te Ākitai Waiohua shows in a space that feels intentional rather than generic. Bring sun protection, watch for bikes, and give yourself enough time to explore beyond the towers.
The playground is located at 98R Bader Drive, Māngere, Auckland.
