Rewi Alley Reserve Playground

Totara Vale

About this playground

Large, open reserve on Trias Road with plenty of room for frisbee, ball play, and easy run-around time beyond the playground itself

At a glance

  • Generous picnic setup with multiple tables and benches, making it an easy choice for longer family outings and birthday catchups
  • Well-maintained, clean playground with excellent shade sails and equipment best suited to younger children around Year 1 to 2
  • On-site toilets and water fountain are practical wins; no dedicated car park, but surrounding street parking is usually workable

Big open reserve, even beyond the playground

Head east along Trias Road and you will spot this playground on your left, set within the expansive Rewi Alley Reserve. The reserve is impressively open and spacious, and even without the play equipment this would still be a great place to spend an afternoon. There is more than enough room for a casual game of frisbee, a kick around, or simply letting kids burn energy in a wide, grassy setting.

Picnic-friendly setup for real family outings

What helps this reserve stand out is its picnic setup. The picnic area is generously sized and genuinely useful, with multiple picnic tables and benches that make it easy for families to settle in for a relaxed lunch before playtime. It feels intentionally designed for real family outings rather than squeezed in as an afterthought.

The only catch is shade: the picnic area itself does not have much coverage, so on bright summer days it is worth bringing hats or your own shade option. When we visited on a Saturday afternoon, a birthday gathering was in full swing on the grass, which felt like a good reflection of what this park does best - it naturally brings people together.

Most of the playground equipment looks like it’s made for Year 1–2 kids or younger.

Shaded play, best for younger kids

The playground itself is clean, tidy, and clearly well maintained. One of its strongest features is the generous shade sail coverage over the equipment, which makes a real difference when the sun is strong. The main equipment is best suited to younger children, roughly around Year 1 to 2 in size and challenge level, so older kids may outgrow it quickly.

That said, there is still plenty for older children nearby. A basketball court sits next to the playground, and the reserve's large open lawn gives them lots of room to move.

For younger monkey-bar fans, there is a small curved set that deserves a mention. It is at a good height for little kids - challenging enough to feel exciting, but not so high that it becomes intimidating.

A statue of Rewi Alley sits in the picnic area right next to the playground.

Practical facilities and parking notes

The whole playground sits in an open, visible position along a main road, which gives it a naturally relaxed and easy-to-supervise feel.

On practical details, this spot does better than many local reserves. Dedicated restrooms are on site, and there is also a water fountain in the picnic area - both genuinely helpful for longer visits with younger kids.

There is no dedicated car park, and weekend parking can occasionally be competitive, but nearby street parking is generally available without too much trouble.

All things considered, Rewi Alley Reserve Playground is a well-rounded, family-friendly destination that works just as well for a quick weekday stop as for a slower weekend outing.
