About this playground
One of the most popular playgrounds on the North Shore, and it's easy to see why. The three-level slide is a favourite with the kids — mine went down it about fifteen times. There's a good range of equipment, a toddler area, picnic spots, and direct beach access, plus a fun rotating viewing structure that's a bit different. Toilets, showers, and drinking fountains are all close by, and Takapuna Library is just up the road. Parking is available but fills up fast on weekends, and it's not the cheapest.

Where our North Shore playground story began
This was the first playground our family visited on the North Shore.
We did not know the area well yet. We just needed somewhere easy, close to the beach, and good for kids. Takapuna Beach Reserve Playground was that place — and it still feels special for that reason. It is busy, popular, and well known. For us, it is also where the whole adventure started.
Plenty to do
There is a lot here for different ages.
The three-level slide is the clear favourite. Our kids went down it again and again. There is a solid mix of climbing and play gear around it, plus a dedicated toddler area that works well for little ones. Picnic spots sit nearby, and the beach is right there when you want a change of scene.
There is a train that kids love to ride while a grown-up pushes.
Fair warning: The train rail is quite stiff. Whoever is pushing it will need to put in some effort. Still worth it for the smiles — just do not expect an easy glide.
Water play — and wet clothes
The water play area is a big draw on warm days.
Kids stay longer than you expect. They also get wet. Plan for that.

Facilities and the beach
Toilets, showers, and drinking fountains are close by. Takapuna Library is just up the road if you want a quiet stop afterwards. Cafés and shops are an easy walk from the reserve, so a playground visit can stretch into a longer outing without much planning.
Walk down toward the beach from the playground and you will find hammocks set up by the sand — a nice pause for parents while the kids keep going.
A few honest caveats
Outside the toddler area, shade is thin across much of the playground. On a hot day that matters. Pack sunscreen, hats, and maybe a blanket you can pull into whatever shade you find.
Parking is available, but it fills fast on weekends — and it is not the cheapest option nearby. Arrive early if you can, or build in a short walk from a bit further out.
Overall thoughts
Takapuna Beach Reserve Playground earns its reputation. It has range, beach access, and facilities that make a longer stay easy. For our family, it will always be the first one — the place that started it all.
Come for the slide and the sand. Pack sun protection, spare clothes for water play, and a bit of patience for parking. You will understand why so many families keep coming back.
