Inwards Reserve Playground

Birkdale

About this playground

This playground features a bright red fire truck themed play structure with a slide, along with several swings including a blue saucer swing and standard swings. The play area is covered with woodchips and protected by large shade sails, making it comfortable even on sunny days. There’s also plenty of open grass space nearby for running around, plus a picnic table for families to sit and relax. Overall, it’s a great little playground for toddlers and younger children.

At a glance

  • Six large shade sails in green and tan cover almost the entire equipment area — the best shade setup we have seen at any North Shore playground
  • Standout red double-decker fire engine with a slide, plus wooden rope structures for slightly older kids — mostly pitched toward toddlers and young children
  • Wide open grassy reserve right beside the playground, with picnic tables in sunny spots — easy to extend the visit beyond the equipment
  • Parking right at the entrance; quiet and somewhat secluded — relaxed crowd levels, but keep a close eye on younger kids when it is very empty
  • No toilets or drinking fountains on site — plan a stop before you arrive or on the way out

Inwards Reserve Playground sits tucked off Salisbury Road in Birkdale — six shade sails, a characterful red fire engine slide, and a big open lawn that invites you to stay longer than planned. It is a pleasant, well-shaded local stop with a lot of charm and a couple of honest shortcomings.

The Shade Situation Is Genuinely Impressive

The first thing you notice when you pull into the car park — which sits right at the entrance, which is a nice bonus — is just how much shade there is. Six large shade sails in green and tan are strung across the playground, covering almost the entire equipment area. On a hot summer day, this makes a real difference. A lot of playgrounds have one or two sails that leave half the equipment baking in the sun, but Inwards Reserve has thought it through properly. The kids can move around freely without you constantly having to calculate which patch is in shadow.

Six shade sails covering nearly the whole playground. It sounds like a small detail but on a sunny day it changes everything — you can just relax instead of constantly shuffling the kids into the shade.

The Red Fire Engine

The playground itself is pitched mostly toward younger children. The standout piece is a bright red double-decker fire engine structure with a slide — and it works exactly as well as it sounds. Our kids latched onto it immediately and stayed there for a long time, doing their version of firefighter roleplay and climbing in and out from every possible angle. Our Year 1 children loved it more than we expected — look closely at the climbing ladder in the photo and you might spot a small foot mid-ascent, exactly where ours spent most of the visit.

That said, it is worth noting that up close the fire engine shows its age a little — the surfaces and fittings feel like they could do with some maintenance attention. Up on the deck, a few areas look a little tired and could use a clean. It did not stop the kids from enjoying it, but it is noticeable when you are up close.

From the top of the fire engine, a few surfaces look less maintained than the rest of the playground — a small shame, but not enough to spoil the fun

Beyond the fire engine, there are some wooden rope structures with enough challenge to keep slightly older kids engaged, which is a welcome addition given how toddler-focused the rest of the equipment is.

Plenty of Green Space, Quietly Tucked Away

Right beside the playground is a wide, open grassy reserve — the kind of space where you spread out a picnic blanket and the kids just run. We have kicked a ball around here, done some impromptu frisbee, and generally used it as an extension of the playground visit rather than a separate thing. The reserve opens up generously, there is plenty of room to run, and the sunny picnic tables are a comfortable spot for lunch on a fine afternoon.

One thing to be aware of: the playground is set back from Salisbury Road and tends to be fairly quiet, sometimes quite empty. On the visits we have made, there were not many other people around. That has a nice side — you rarely have to share equipment or navigate crowds — but it does mean keeping a close eye on the kids. The location is tucked away rather than on a busy street, so on quieter days I'd advise staying within sight of younger kids — the same sensible habit you'd keep at any smaller neighbourhood reserve.

Before You Go

No toilets or drinking fountains on site, so it is worth planning around that — either stop before you arrive or factor in a nearby option on the way out. There may also be park maintenance signage up from time to time, so a quick check before making a special trip is a good idea. The playground sits at 51A Salisbury Road, Birkdale, Auckland 0626.

If you are already in Birkdale, Vandeleur Reserve Playground is essentially next door — an easy two-stop morning if you want a bit more variety.

Overall

Inwards Reserve is a pleasant, well-shaded local playground with a lot of charm and a couple of honest shortcomings. The equipment feels a little sparse relative to the size of the space — given the generous lawn and the excellent shade setup, there is room for more to do, and the fire engine could use some attention to bring it back to its best. But for younger kids on a sunny day, the combination of shade, a fun centrepiece structure, and a wide open lawn to run around in makes it a genuinely easy and relaxed visit. Parking right at the entrance is a small but appreciated touch.
