Marlborough Park Playground
Glenfield
About this playground
This well-equipped playground sits within the expansive grounds of Marlborough Park, which includes a full basketball court, skate park, bike repair station, and dedicated parking. The play equipment skews toward toddlers, so older kids may find it underwhelming. Facilities include adult fitness equipment, water fountains, picnic tables, and nearby toilets, making this one of the best-equipped playgrounds on the North Shore.
At a glance
- Basketball court, skate park, pump track, bike repair station, adult fitness equipment, flying fox — and that's before you get to the playground itself
- Dedicated on-site parking, clean toilets near the car park, water fountains, and picnic tables — one of the best-equipped parks on the North Shore
- Rubber surfacing throughout the playground (not wood chip) — genuinely easy with a pram; the wider park has a gentle slope, so terrain isn't totally flat
- Two distinct play zones: a strong toddler area, but kids in the middle range (around 5) may find the older kids' cargo net climber too big to feel approachable
- Facilities are impressive in scope but feel a little worn — everything is functional, but a freshen-up would make a real difference
The Most Comprehensively Equipped Park We've Visited
Basketball court, skate park, bike repair station, adult fitness equipment, flying fox — and that's before you get to the playground itself.
A Park with Plenty of Facilities
Marlborough Park is a big park, and it feels like one from the moment you arrive. Dedicated parking right on-site, clean toilets near the car park, water fountains, picnic tables, a basketball court, a skate park, a pump track, a bike repair station, some adult fitness equipment tucked alongside the playground. If you're a family that likes to do a lot in one place without moving the car, this is your park.
The park has a gentle slope running through it, which makes the park feel open and spacious. It's worth knowing if you're coming with a pram or a very young toddler, since the terrain isn't totally flat. The playground itself is covered in rubber surfacing rather than wood chips, which makes getting around with a stroller genuinely easy, and also softer and easier for younger kids to play on.
One honest note: while the facilities are impressive in scope, the overall feel is a little worn. The park hasn't had a renovation in a while, and it shows in places. Everything is functional — nothing is broken or neglected — but a freshen-up would make a real difference. The facilities are still good overall, but a refurbishment would make a noticeable difference.
The Flying Fox — Don't Miss It
I almost forgot to mention this, which would have been a mistake. There's a flying fox here, and it's a good one. The length is decent, but what makes it stand out is the incline — it actually builds real speed in a way that a lot of flying foxes simply don't. It's set a little away from the main playground, up the hill roughly in the 10 o'clock direction from the play area, so it's easy to miss if you don't seek it out.
The flying fox is tucked up the hill and easy to overlook — but it's one of the fastest we've tried. Seek it out before you leave.
Age Range — Know Before You Go
The playground divides fairly clearly into two zones, and the gap between them is noticeable. The toddler area is well set up — rubber-floored, appropriately scaled, with the kinds of sensory and low-level equipment that younger kids love. Our little ones were happy here. The colourful rubber surfacing you can see in the photos — blues, greens, yellow arches — makes it a visually fun space too.
The older kids' zone on the other side is a different story. The main feature is a large cargo net climber — but for a five-year-old, it's just a bit too big to feel approachable. Our kids tried and quickly lost confidence. There isn't much else in that zone to fall back on, so kids in that middle range — not quite toddlers, not yet fully independent climbers — may find themselves a bit lost between the two areas.
One more thing worth flagging: the older kids' area sits right next to the skate park, with no real barrier between the two spaces. On a busy day, it's worth keeping an eye on younger children when the skate park is busy.
A few things to know
Toilets are near the car park, a short walk from the playground — worth a stop on arrival. The flying fox is up the hill to the upper-left of the main play area; easy to miss but worth finding. And if you're coming for a tennis session at the Marlborough Park Tennis Club next door, the playground is right there for the kids once you're done.
The park is located at 13 Chartwell Avenue, Glenfield, Auckland 0629.
