A School Ground, But Make It Weekend

School playgrounds during the weekend are one of those underrated family discoveries — no queues, no noise, just clean and well-maintained equipment that sees a fraction of the weekend foot traffic of a typical public park. Stanley Bay School playground in Stanley Point is exactly that kind of find. Located at 15 Russell Street, the grounds are quietly open on weekends, and on our visits we were far from alone — other local families were already well settled in, which suggests this is a regularly enjoyed community space rather than a one-off lucky encounter.

The best entry point is from the Glen Bay Road side, where there's a small gate you can simply push open and walk through. While the exact official weekend opening policy should be verified, we encountered no issues, and several other local families were playing there freely, suggesting it is regularly open to the community on weekends.

Good to know

We had no issues visiting on the weekend, and other local families were doing the same. That said, as it's a school ground, it's worth a quick check to confirm weekend access before making a special trip — policies can vary and may change over time.

Clean, Organised, and Sandpit

The grounds feel noticeably well-kept — the kind of tidy that comes from regular maintenance rather than a recent touch-up. Everything is orderly and clean, and there's a calm to the space that you don't always get at busier public playgrounds. The standout for younger kids is undoubtedly the sandpit. It's a generous one, perfect for toddlers who could happily spend an entire visit in there, and our kids were no exception. If your little one loves digging and building, this sandpit alone makes the visit worthwhile.

The main climbing and play structures are pitched slightly older — comfortably suited to primary school kids around Years 3 or 4, with enough physical challenge to keep that age group genuinely engaged. A large shade sail covers the sandpit area only, which helps on sunnier days. It's not a sprawling multi-zone playground, but what's here is solid and well-suited to its purpose.

Toddlers in the sandpit, older kids on the climbing frames — everyone found their corner without anyone needing to wait. That's a good playground.

Getting There

Stanley Point is a quiet, leafy peninsula — the kind of neighbourhood where a weekend playground visit slots naturally into a slow morning walk. Street parking is available in the surrounding streets, and the Glen Bay Road gate makes access straightforward once you know where to look. If you're already exploring the area, Kiwi Reserve Playground is a short stroll away for a quick slide-and-swing stop. It's a small, unassuming space that rewards those in the know — exactly the kind of local gem that's best shared quietly.
