Holloway Reserve Playground

Auckland

About this playground

Holloway Reserve is a secluded local secret at the end of Aramoana Avenue that offers a modest setup of three swings and a picnic table, distinguished by its stunning, direct views of the Auckland CBD skyline.

At a glance

  • A tiny waterfront playground at Holloway Reserve with just three swings and a picnic table
  • Standout harbour view looking straight across to the Auckland CBD skyline
  • More of a quiet short-stop local secret than a full afternoon playground destination
  • Google Maps labeling is currently incorrect (as of May 2026), so follow Holloway Reserve signage on site

Barely a playground, absolutely worth a stop

Calling this a playground feels like a stretch, and honestly it still does even as I write this. But it has swings, it has a picnic table, and it has a reason to visit, so it made the list.

Holloway Reserve sits at the far end of Aramoana Avenue. Follow the street to its end, head down the steps, and you will find this little spot waiting quietly at the bottom. It is less a playground and more a small waterfront retreat: three modest swings and a single picnic table, tucked into a corner that faces directly out toward the Auckland CBD across the water.

On a clear day, the view is genuinely lovely. It is the kind of place you file away as a local secret, the sort of spot you bring a visiting friend to and say, "not many people know about this one." That is exactly what this is.

It is worth coming here at least once, even just for a bit of fresh air and a few quiet minutes with the view. Not a destination for a long afternoon out, but a very pleasant short stop.

Practical notes before you go

Aramoana Avenue narrows toward the end and turning around can be awkward. We would suggest parking around 50 to 100 metres before the reserve and walking the rest of the way.

There are steps down to the reserve, so prams and wheelchairs will find access difficult. It is worth keeping that in mind before making the trip.

Important map confusion (May 2026)

As of May 2026, Google Maps has this location listed incorrectly as Aramoana Reserve / Indie's Playground, which is wrong on both counts. This is not Aramoana Reserve, and Indie's Playground is actually a different playground one block up on Kawerau Avenue.

The two appear to have ended up duplicated on the map, which can easily send visitors to the wrong place. The official name, confirmed by Auckland Council signage on site, is Holloway Reserve.
