Kaipatiki Park Playground

Glenfield, North Shore

About this playground

Kaipātiki Park Playground offers a well-rounded mix of classic equipment — swings, slides, monkey bars, and a standout large rope climbing pyramid — set within a spacious park complete with a rugby field for extra running room. It's a solid, no-fuss family outing, just be sure to check for rugby matches before you go on weekends, as parking nearby fills up fast on game days.

At a glance

  • Solid set of classic playground equipment — swings, slides, climbing frame, multiple monkey bars, and a large rope climbing pyramid
  • Wood chip ground surface throughout, equipment is older but well-used and functional
  • Adjacent to a large rugby field — fantastic open space for running around, but avoid parking nearby on match days
  • Dedicated car park right next to the playground — generally easy, except when rugby is on

Room to play

Kaipātiki Park Playground occupies one corner of the wider Kaipātiki Park, and it's the kind of playground that delivers exactly what you'd hope for — enough equipment to keep kids genuinely busy, and enough surrounding space to make the whole outing feel open and unhurried.

The equipment lineup is solid and covers all the classics: swings, a slide, a climbing frame, and multiple monkey bars for kids who like to test their grip strength. The ground is wood chip throughout, which gives it that familiar, slightly old-school playground feel. The equipment itself isn't new — it's been around for a while — but it's all in working order and the kids don't seem to mind in the slightest. When there's enough to climb and swing on, age of equipment rarely matters.

The rope pyramid

The clear highlight, though, is the rope climbing pyramid. It takes up a generous chunk of one side of the playground and is genuinely impressive in scale — the kind of structure that immediately draws kids in and keeps them scrambling up and down for far longer than you'd expect. Our kids made a beeline for it and it was easily the most popular spot while we were there. If your kids are into climbing, this alone makes the visit worthwhile.

Fields and open space

Beyond the playground itself, the real selling point is the space. Right next door is a large rugby field — wide, flat, and perfect for a run-around, a kick of the ball, or just letting the kids burn off energy while the adults take a breather. It's the kind of open green space that transforms a playground visit into a proper outdoor outing.

Before you go

On the practical side, there's a dedicated car park right alongside the playground, which makes things easy on most days. No water fountain was visible during our visit, so it's worth bringing your own drinks. The one thing to genuinely keep in mind: if there's a rugby match on — which on a Saturday is a real possibility — parking within about 200 metres becomes essentially a write-off. The fields draw a crowd, cars fill up fast, and what's normally a relaxed park-and-go situation turns into a bit of a scramble. Check whether there's a game on before you head out on weekends, and if there is, give yourself extra time or park further afield.

Overall, Kaipātiki Park Playground is a dependable, enjoyable outing for families with kids of most ages. It's not the most modern playground on the North Shore, but between the rope pyramid, the open fields, and the easy access, it earns its place as a solid go-to.
