Little Shoal Bay Playground
Northcote, North Shore
About this playground
Little Shoal Bay Playground is a toddler-friendly facility featuring a blue and beige play structure with low-height slides, a crawling tunnel, and metal climbing frames. The equipment is set on a safety surface of dark woodchips, surrounded by a spacious open grass area and lush greenery, including large trees and a palm tree. Its low-scale design and easy-access steps make it an ideal spot for younger children to play safely in a natural park setting.
At a glance
- Full shade cover over the entire playground, making it great even on hot, sunny days
- Stunning beachside setting with direct views across the water to the Auckland CBD
- Well-rounded facilities for all ages: toilets, picnic tables, benches, monkey bars, and open green space
- Generous on-site parking, extra street parking nearby, and a tennis court right across the road
In our top three
With my 5-year-old twins, I've explored at least 30 playgrounds across the North Shore over the years. Some were fine, some forgettable, and a handful were genuinely great. But Little Shoal Bay Playground? This one sits comfortably in my personal top three, and my kids would wholeheartedly agree.
Shade that matters
The first thing you notice is the shade. The entire playground is covered, which sounds like a small detail until you arrive on a bright Sunday and realize you can stay as long as you like without anyone overheating. We visited on a sunny afternoon, and it made all the difference. Full marks for that alone.

Harbour and CBD views
Then there's the view. Right beside the playground, the water opens up and the Auckland CBD skyline sits across the harbour, close enough to feel almost within reach. It's a genuinely beautiful spot, and the kind of backdrop that makes sitting on a bench with a coffee feel like a proper treat. Speaking of which, there are plenty of benches and picnic tables around, so you're never hunting for somewhere to sit.

Playgrounds for All Ages
The playground itself is thoughtfully designed. There are a couple of monkey bars, open grassy areas, and, importantly, equipment that works for a range of ages. Whether you've got a toddler or a school-age kid, there's something for everyone without it feeling too babyish or too challenging. That balance is harder to get right than it sounds, and this place nails it.
Parking and extras
Practical details are solid too: toilets on-site, a large car park that handles most days comfortably (just avoid peak holiday times if you can), and street parking nearby as a backup. If tennis is your thing, there's a court right across from the playground, making it easy to turn this into a full morning out.

Bottom line
Honestly, it's hard to think of a reason not to come here. Beach views, shade, toilets, great equipment, and easy parking: Little Shoal Bay checks every box. It's one of those rare playgrounds that's just as enjoyable for grown-ups as it is for kids.
