Browns Bay
About this playground
With its mix of active climbing features and toddler-friendly interactive spaces, all set against a backdrop of open greenery, it is an excellent choice for a diverse and comfortable family outing.
At a glance
- Beach-view playground within Browns Bay Beach Reserve — but equipment is older and not particularly well maintained
- Gets very crowded on weekends — hard to supervise kids and equipment is tough to enjoy without the hustle
- There’s also a small track for bikes, skateboards, and scooters, even though it’s quite compact in size.
- Parking is genuinely painful on weekends — avoid Beach Front Lane and plan your approach carefully
Browns Bay Beach Reserve Playground — Great Location, But Manage Your Expectations
With so many photos of children laughing and playing, along with highly praised reviews, this playground felt like the most anticipated stop for me and my kids. And while the joyful scenes and busy atmosphere were exactly as shown, it was honestly a little too much once we were there. The location is genuinely lovely — beachfront, beautiful views, right in the heart of a popular reserve — but the playground itself doesn't quite live up to the billing, particularly on a busy weekend.
Equipment and crowds
The equipment is serviceable but on the older side, and it doesn't give the impression of being regularly maintained. On weekends, the sheer volume of people descending on Browns Bay makes it difficult to keep a relaxed eye on younger children — the playground gets packed, the equipment gets competitive, and what should be a fun outing starts to feel more like crowd management. With only one or two shade sails across the whole area, finding relief from the sun is also a bit of a challenge. For a playground of this profile and popularity, it feels like it deserves a bit more investment.
Facilities
That said, the wider reserve does cover the essentials. There's a water fountain and toilets available, which is always welcome — though we'll be straightforward here: the toilets on our visit were not pleasant. Unclean, smelly, and clearly not being maintained to the standard you'd hope for at a busy public space. If that kind of thing bothers you (and it should), plan accordingly or seek out alternatives nearby. There’s also a small track for bikes, skateboards, and scooters, even though it’s quite compact in size.
Secret monkey bars
There was one genuinely delightful discovery, though — entirely by accident. My daughter is a devoted monkey bar enthusiast and was visibly disappointed when a first scan of the playground suggested there weren't any. Then she found them: tucked underneath the central slide structure, almost hidden from plain view, was a set of monkey bars. A secret monkey bar. She was absolutely thrilled, and honestly, so were we. It's a small thing, but it turned what was shaping up to be a lukewarm visit into a memorable moment.
Parking
Now, parking. This deserves its own paragraph, because it can genuinely derail your day if you're not prepared. On weekends — and especially on Sunday market days — Browns Bay gets extremely busy. If you accidentally turn into Beach Front Lane, be warned: extracting yourself from that situation can easily cost you ten minutes or more. We learned this the hard way. The nearby shops have car parks, but they fill up fast. Our solution was to use the public parking off Valley Road (follow Cycle Road), but even that fills up — so the earlier you arrive, the better. Avoid peak hours if you can, and do not let Google Maps guide you down Beach Front Lane on a Sunday.
Final Thoughts
Browns Bay Beach Reserve is a great destination in its own right, but if the playground is your main goal on a busy weekend, you might find yourself wishing you'd gone somewhere a little less famous and a little more manageable. Save it for a quiet weekday if you can — the beach and the views are genuinely lovely when the crowds thin out.
For a first beach playground experience, this place works quite well. But the North Shore coastline is already packed with excellent options such as Takapuna Beach Playground, Milford Reserve, and Little Shoal Bay.
Browns Bay Beach Reserve is still worth visiting, but on a busy weekend, especially if the playground is your main goal, you may find it a bit too popular and overwhelming. In that case, somewhere smaller and calmer like Sherwood Playground (only 5 minutes away) might be a better fit.
Try to come on a weekday if you can — when the crowds clear, the beach and views are really enjoyable.
