Manuka Reserve Playground

About this playground

Manuka Reserve Playground is a timber-heavy setup with a fort, climbing wall, slides, a spider-web rope net, and water-view swings, plus balance elements on wood chips mixed with colorful rubber. It suits brave climbers but has gentler options too. Paved paths are pram-friendly, steps connect to the coastal walkway, and there's a basketball hoop on the park's edge. Just note that most equipment is in full sun - only one shade sail covers the toddler slide - so bring hats and sunscreen. Lynn Reserve nearby makes a great add-on.

At a glance

  • Timber-toned fort with climbing wall, slides, and a big spider-web net; gentle net and a smaller slide for toddlers, tougher routes for older kids
  • Swings with water views; wood chips with purple, green, and yellow rubber cushioning
  • Steps connect straight to the Manuka Reserve coastal walkway; basketball hoop at the park edge; stroller-friendly paved paths
  • Mostly sunny, with one shade sail over the toddler slide; pair with nearby Lynn Reserve Playground for a longer outing
  • Balance logs and stepping stumps, plus ground-level and aerial stepping elements and a rotating ladder on the main structure

Just go, seriously

If you are reading this and you have never been to Manuka Reserve Playground, I will keep it simple: just go. We have visited a lot of playgrounds across the North Shore — big ones, fancy ones, ones with elaborate equipment and all the bells and whistles — but I am not sure any of them have kept my kids as genuinely entertained as this one. There is something about this place that is hard to put into words until you see it in person.

Pretty to look at, clever by design

The first thing you notice is that the playground just looks good. The surfacing is wood chips, but mixed in with colourful rubber cushioning in purple, green, and yellow that gives the whole area a warm, considered feel. The equipment itself is mostly timber-toned rather than the bright primary colours you see everywhere else, which somehow makes it feel more like a real place and less like a generic playground.

But look closer and you realise the design is doing a lot of work. There are stepping stones at ground level, suspended stepping stones up in the air, a rotating ladder that asks kids to think before they climb, and a general sense that whoever designed this wanted children to actually figure things out — not just go up a slide and repeat. It rewards creativity and a bit of bravery.

That said, it is not all challenge. There is a smaller slide and gentler net for toddlers, and swings for the little ones too. It covers the full range without feeling like it is trying too hard.

The playground keeps kids challenged and engaged the whole time. Our kids absolutely loved it.

Beyond the playground

One of the quieter highlights is what is just below the playground. Head down the steps and you will find a path that connects directly to the Manuka Reserve coastal walkway — proper scenery, fresh air, and a nice way to wind down after the kids have had their fill of climbing.
If you follow the steps tucked away in one corner of the playground and head on down, you'll find a charming little walking path waiting for you at the bottom.

There is also a freshly maintained basketball hoop on the edge of the park if your older kids want to shoot some hoops. The paved paths around the playground are stroller-friendly, which is worth knowing if you are coming with a pram.

A few notes

If I had to find something to complain about, it would be the shade — or the lack of it. There is one shade sail positioned over the toddler slide, but the rest of the playground is pretty exposed. On a bright day, you will feel it. Bring hats and sunscreen. There is one picnic table in the shaded section, which is fine, but another one or two would make this place close to perfect for a longer visit.

There's a small slide for young children too.

It is also worth mentioning that the playground sits a little off the beaten track — tucked away rather than sitting right on an open street. There are usually plenty of people around and it feels safe, but it is a touch more secluded than most playgrounds we have been to, so it is good to know that going in.

Editor’s note: As of early May 2026, the toilets are under repair and a portable toilet has been set up in the meantime. Hopefully that will be sorted soon, because everything else about this place is pretty hard to fault.
