Lynn Reserve Playground

Bayview

About this playground

The playground has a great setup - rope tunnel, slide, big rope net, crawler tunnels, monkey bars, basket swing, stepping logs, and a basketball hoop, all under bright pink shade sails on rubber and wood-chip surfacing. It suits a wide age range, from toddlers to older kids. The real draw is the space: a huge grass field, a scooter/bike loop, and picnic tables right by the playground. Toilets and a drinking fountain are on site, and Manuka Reserve Playground is just a few minutes away if you want a second stop.

At a glance

  • Rope tunnel to a slide, a large slanted rope web, crawler tunnels, and monkey bars — a rare mix that genuinely works from toddlers through to about Year 6
  • Bright pink shade sails over much of the equipment, with blue rubber soft-fall and wood chips underfoot
  • Huge open green space, a proper field for ball games, and a simple perimeter track where older kids were already zipping on scooters and bikes when we arrived
  • Picnic tables in the shaded zone, clean toilets and a drinking fountain right next to the playground — plus Manuka Reserve Playground only a few minutes away by car if you want a second stop

Is it worth the drive?

Lynn Reserve Playground sits about 13 kilometres from our place — with traffic, that is roughly a 30-minute drive. For context, we have visited a lot of playgrounds across the North Shore, and most of our go-tos are within a few minutes from home. When we do venture further out, it is always a bit of a gamble. Sometimes we get there, take one look around, and quietly wonder why we bothered. But every now and then, a playground genuinely surprises you — the kind where you think, oh wow, this is actually something. Lynn Reserve is firmly in that second category.

It does not have the flashy wow-factor of somewhere like Takapuna Beach playground, but what it does offer is something arguably more valuable: space. Lots of it. Wide open green space, a proper grassy field for running around, and a simple track looping around the perimeter where kids can ride scooters or bikes. When we arrived, there were already a bunch of older kids zipping around on their wheels, which told us everything we needed to know.

Something for every age

One of the things I appreciated most was how well this playground caters to a wide age range. The setup genuinely feels like it was designed with both toddlers and older kids in mind, rather than just picking one.

For the little ones, there are small crawler tunnels and stepping log stumps to leap between — and crucially, that area is tucked under the shade sails, so even on a bright summer day, you are not watching your toddler squint through direct sun the whole time.

For bigger kids, the large triangular rope net is a clear winner. Our kids made a beeline for it and stayed there for a good chunk of our visit. The monkey bars were another hit — my daughter, who has very strong opinions about monkey bars, approved. There is also a proper rope tunnel that connects to a slide, which adds just enough of a challenge to keep older kids engaged. I would comfortably say this is one of those rare playgrounds that works for everyone from toddlers right through to around Year 6.

From the photo it's hard to tell, but around the back there was a solid net-and-rope setup that older kids would love.

Know Before You Go

A small thing, but still handy to know: the toilet doors here are manual rather than automatic. So when you go in, the door will not lock on its own - you need to press a button to lock it yourself. If I remember right, most park toilet doors lock automatically when you open them and head in, but that is not the case here. However urgent it feels, do not forget it like I did - press the button as soon as you get into the toilet.

Worth the trip

All things considered, Lynn Reserve is absolutely worth the drive, even if you do not live nearby. Pack some sandwiches, let the kids run loose on the field, and plan for at least a couple of hours.

If by some chance your kids burn through it and want more, Manuka Reserve Playground is literally three minutes away by car and is another great playground. Between the two, you have got yourself a pretty solid day out.

My son just loves this tunnel - he calls it his home!
