Pinehill School Playground

Pinehill, North Shore

About this playground

Relatively new, well-maintained school playground with artificial turf and a shaded toddler sandpit area

At a glance

  • Diverse equipment for all ages — though monkey bars are quite high, better suited for kids 120 cm and above
  • CCTV on-site, immaculately kept — feels safe and clean throughout
  • Access after school hours and on weekends/holidays — but check before you go, and note: no pets allowed

Worth the detour

Some of the best playground discoveries happen by accident. We stumbled across Pinehill School Playground while passing through on the way to Taroka Reserve, spotted the equipment through the fence, and decided to take a quick detour. It turned out to be one of the better school playgrounds we've come across — clean, thoughtfully designed, and well worth a visit if you're in the area.

The whole space is laid out on artificial turf, which gives it a neat, almost pristine feel underfoot. The toddler section is particularly well done — it has its own sandpit with shade installed overhead, which is a nice touch and keeps the little ones comfortable even on sunnier days. It's clearly been designed with different age groups in mind, and you can tell: there's enough variety in the equipment that both younger kids and older ones find something to keep them busy.

Monkey bars and reach

One thing to keep in mind is that some of the equipment — the monkey bars in particular — is on the higher side. Kids under around 120 cm will likely find those a stretch, literally. Our smaller one had a go and it was visibly a bit of a reach, so just be prepared to lend a hand or redirect the little ones to the toddler area instead. The rest of the equipment is accessible and fun across a good range of ages though.

Rules, hours, and parking

Because it's a school playground, everything is kept to a noticeably higher standard than your average public park. CCTV is installed throughout, the grounds are well looked after, and the overall condition of the equipment feels relatively new and in great shape. That said, being on school grounds does mean you need to be a bit mindful of when you visit.

As a general guide, the playground is accessible after school hours — typically from around 3:00–3:15 pm until dusk on school days. On weekends, public holidays, and during school holidays, it's usually open all day. Many New Zealand schools operate under an "After Hours" policy that formally allows the public to use school grounds outside of school hours, which is great to know. However, the standard conditions that come with that policy are worth keeping in mind: parents and caregivers are fully responsible for supervising their children, as there is no school oversight outside of school hours. And no pets — that one applies universally.

Parking is one area where you'll need to be a little patient. There's no dedicated car park, and the immediate surroundings are fairly residential. That said, Spencer Road nearby has some roadside parking available, so with a bit of luck you shouldn't have to walk too far. Just factor in a few extra minutes if you're visiting on a busy afternoon or weekend.

Do your own research before heading out, as access policies can vary and change. But if the timing works out, Pinehill School Playground is a genuinely impressive spot — the kind you'd never find on a list, but feel quietly smug about once you've discovered it.
